OCEANSIDE, Calif. -- Surfing is a lifestyle in San Diego, and a new exhibition at the California Surf Museum will explore the science behind the sport.The multi-media exhibit uses charts, diagrams, photographs, art and video monitors to explain the energy, tides, types of surf breaks and conditions and custodianship of the oceans, the California Surf Museum said in a release Wednesday. “While modern science is forever looking for explanations of what goes on in the natural world, modern day surfers have been at the ready to apply this knowledge where they can in advancing in the art of riding waves,” said Jim Kempton, President of the California Surf Museum’s Board of Directors. “As early as the mid-1940s, California surfing trailblazer Bob Simmons, a former Cal Tech student, was consulting hydrographic coastal navigation charts to discover formally unknown surf sites. BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets were mixed Thursday after the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark lending rate again to cool inflation and said it wasn’t sure what may come next.Shanghai and Hong Kong advanced while Seoul and Sydney declined. Japanese markets were closed for a holiday.Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index fell 0.7% on Wednesday after the Fed announced a 0.25 percentage point increase in its lending rate. (AP) — The death of four horses at Churchill Downs over a span of five days has overshadowed preparations for the Kentucky Derby.Two horses trained by Saffie Joseph Jr. collapsed on the track and died over the past week. Halton police say an 8-year-old girl has died after being fatally struck by the driver of a vehicle outside of a high school in Burlington.Authorities were called to Burlington Central Secondary School and Central Public School just after 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday for reports that a pedestrian had been struck in the parking lot.Central Public School’s online newsletter shows that a spring concert was set to start there at 6 p.m.The young girl was assessed by paramedics and rushed to McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton, where she was pronounced dead.Police said a 21-year-old male driver fled the scene but was arrested a short time later at his home in the area.The driver will be charged with failure to remain and could face additional offences.Halton police are crediting witnesses that were able to track down the driver’s licence plate, leading to his arrest.McHenry police: Boater finds body in Fox River as detectives search for missing man

It's the world's first vaccine for RSV and the Food and Drug Administration gave the nod Wednesday. It's called Arexvy and the shot is designed to prevent Respiratory Syncitial Virus.
