Five missed opportunities in Adam Wainwright's pursuit for 200 wins

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 05:33:49 GMT

ST. LOUIS - Set to retire at the season's end, Adam Wainwright was hoping to reach a big career milestone early in his grand sendoff. He hasn't reached it yet, and he still has some chances at it, but time is ticking. Wainwright continues his push for 200 career wins. If he can reach that point before October 1, he will become one of only five active pitchers to reach that mark and one of just 120 all-time with at least 200 MLB victories. The soon-to-be 42-year-old has been stuck at 198 wins since mid-June. He's made ten starts since then, though it's been a tough road toward the milestone. He's winless in his last 10 outings, the St. Louis Cardinals have only won one of those, and he only has two quality starts in that stretch. Another gut-punch: Cardinals are 20 games below .500 for first time in decades Wainwright's latest start Monday was one of his better outings of the season and a textbook-missed opportunity. Wainwright battled with San Diego Padres ace Blake Snell to keep ...

Meanwhile, Sterbick took over head coaching duties in May after former coach Brandon Moore departed to FCS-level San Diego — the program’s third head coach in the last three years. After falling one game short, Sterbick, who remains the offensive coordinator, is eager to prove the Orediggers can not only cap...

America is using up its groundwater like there’s no tomorrow

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 05:33:49 GMT

Global warming has focused concern on land and sky as soaring temperatures intensify hurricanes, droughts and wildfires. But another climate crisis is unfolding, underfoot and out of view. Many of the aquifers that supply 90% of the nation’s water systems, and which have transformed vast stretches of America into some of the world’s most bountiful farmland, are being severely depleted. These declines are threatening irreversible harm to the American economy and society as a whole. The New York Times conducted one of the most comprehensive examinations of groundwater depletion nationwide and found that America’s life-giving resource is being exhausted in much of the country, and in many cases it won’t come back. Huge industrial farms and sprawling cities are draining aquifers that could take centuries or millenniums to replenish themselves, if they recover at all.States and communities are already paying the price.Groundwater loss is hurting breadbasket states like Kansas, where the ma...

A wall or curtain will separate the section from the wailing masses farther back. The airline said on its website that it will charge passengers an extra reservation fee of 45 euros ($49) for the no-kids zone, rising to 100 euros ($109) for one of the extra-legroom seats. To an...
