Veterinarians in Canada say they are experiencing extreme burnout and plummeting mental health due to staff shortages, a booming number of animal patients and the round-the-clock stress of the job.Neil Pothier, a veterinarian since 1985 who runs an animal hospital in Digby, N.S., said caring for animals has never been easy, but it’s a job he’s always loved.“But now, all day long, people are talking about burnout and thinking of quitting,” Pothier said following a meeting with veterinarians from across Nova Scotia. “We are struggling to try and make it.”Pothier said the increased workload, which in many rural areas comes with on-call emergency care 24 hours a day, is resulting in severe stress and exhaustion that has worsened over time. “People are just at the point where they don’t know what to do. And there is already a high suicide rate in the country in our profession, which is terrifying.”Survey data compiled in 2020 suggests that veterinarians in Canada were f...Patchy morning fog gives way to sunny skies and mild temps

For Doyle, it was business as usual. In the eighth, he sprinted to shallow right-center, dove and robbed Arizona’s Gabriel Moreno of a bloop single to notch the third out of the inning. Colorado reliever Matt Koch saluted from the mound.No. 8: Surprise, surprise! Sept. 12, Coors FieldThe Cubs’ Cody Bellinger cracked a line drive to right-center in the first inning and coasted into second base with what he thought was a double. Maybe he forgot about Doyle’s arm. Whatever the case, Doyle scooped up the ball and threw a strike to shortstop Alan Trejo, who tagged out a shocked Bellinger. The Broncos are not done yet.Denver won two straight games before the bye week, leading to the decision to stand pat at the trade deadline and attempt to make a postseason push in the second half. The Broncos have a 5% chance of making the playoffs, according to the New York Times, so the odds are slim.Since Denver (3-5) plans to fight until the bitter end, let’s try to predict how the rest of the season could play out.at Buffalo Bills (Nov. 13)Let’s get wild. The Broncos are motivated, and the week off shouldn’t take away that fire. Buffalo is 2-2 in its last four games, while each matchup has been decided by six points or fewer. The Bills have not been the best at defending the run, allowing 122 yards per game. Denver will pound the football, and the defense will force Bills quarterback Josh Allen to throw a couple of interceptions. Prediction: Winvs. Minnesota Vikings (Nov. 19)The Vikings have won three straight after starting the season at 1-4. But they recently lost quarterback...Nuggets Journal: “Puppy lord” Kentavious Caldwell-Pope sets NBA All-Defensive team goal, with inspiration from Reggie Jackson

An awards campaign has already been launched two weeks into the Nuggets’ 2023-24 season, but its true origins are as organic as a one-on-one pickup basketball game. The inspiration dates back to February 2015.Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was no longer a rookie when Reggie Jackson joined the Pistons at the trade deadline, but the second-year guard was still building his reputation. Jackson, three years older than KCP, faced him in one-on-one shortly after the trade.“I think I can play ones pretty well,” Jackson told The Denver Post. “I haven’t met too many guys that can stay in front of me.”But Caldwell-Pope could. Jackson tried three different moves and couldn’t score on him. “He cut me off three straight times,” Jackson recalled. “I was like, ‘You’ve gotta be fouling. There’s gotta be something you’re doing that’s illegal.’ I’ve got quite a few moves. I’ve got a lot of stuff in my bag, and he was on everything. Rookie Brenton Doyle is the best defensive center fielder in Rockies history. Period. At least for one season. The statistics say so. So does the eye test.Doyle should win a National League Gold Glove when the awards are announced Sunday night. If he does not, the managers and coaches who cast votes weren’t paying attention or didn’t do their homework.“Cory (Sullivan) and I have already said he’s the best center fielder in Rox history,” said Ryan Spilborghs. “Go back to the tape. We said it within watching him for a week.”The duo knows what it’s talking about. Spilborghs and Sullivan, the Rockies’ TV analysts, both roamed the wide-open spaces of Coors Field. Spilborghs started 89 games in center, from 2005 to ’11. Sullivan started 183 games, from 2005 to ’08.Doyle’s numbers were off the charts. He led all major league players with a 24.5 Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR), more than 10 points higher than the next closest player...Opinion: I dedicated my life to the progressive movement. The Left’s anti-Zionism left me behind

Every week we begin our staff meeting sharing our highs and lows. They can be personal or professional, anything from the anticipation of Taylor Swift’s new album or the heartache of having a parent in the hospital. I look forward to this chance to connect with my teammates on a personal level before we dive into the work.So when my turn came, I allowed myself to be vulnerable, to really open up about how much I have been struggling since the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel, and my heartbreak over innocent lives being taken on both sides.I also shared how I felt alienated as an American Jew in the progressive movement at this moment. How aside from the Jewish people, everyone else seems to have moved on from the horrific events that precipitated this war — the rape and murder of Jewish women at a music festival, the beheading of Jewish babies, and the hundreds of people still held hostage by Hamas in Gaza. Instead of being given the space to grieve, we have had to use ...Inside the Joe Biden-Mike Johnson relationship: Greetings, briefings and clashes over foreign aid

WASHINGTON (AP) — Inside the White House Situation Room, new House Speaker Mike Johnson made clear to Biden administration officials his demands when it came to foreign assistance: Aid to Israel for its war against Hamas would have to be separated out from support for Ukraine, defending itself from a Russian invasion now more than 20 months long.Immediately, Johnson faced pushback, according to people with knowledge of the Oct. 26 briefing. Democratic lawmakers in attendance, as well as national security adviser Jake Sullivan and White House budget director Shalanda Young — spelled out to Johnson their deep opposition to splitting up the aid, said the people, who were granted anonymity to discuss a private meeting. Even some House Republicans in the room signaled they disagreed with the new speaker’s stance. “He was listening to a degree, but he was also bringing forth many of the MAGA Republican viewpoints and not from a perspective of bringing Congress together to move us fo...Gunfire strikes home, vehicle near elementary school in Sterling
